My Thoughts:

Although there are a few good points and pieces of advice in Hope for Your Marriage, I found is pretty much like any other book on marital advice. There is a bit of scripture quoted, but more personal with many stories of other couples and those couples are all counselors or in the ministry at Lakewood Church. I was hoping to find something that would be geared to couples who had been married for quite a period of time, but this seems more geared to those who are seeking marriage or have been married only a short period of time.

I will admit my thinking was swayed a bit when the authors used the illustration of male vs female brain as something of their own concoction instead of giving any reference to where it came from. It was almost word for word as it was presented by Mark Gungor more than 10 years ago on his DVD. Here is an excerpt of that DVD from YouTube that the authors used - especially the boxes and the nothing box:



I ended up wondering what else was not original and with the many discussions about Lakewood Church and Joel Osteen and how wonderful things are there, if it's not more of a plug for the Osteen empire and not so much for really helping couples.

Personally, I felt this book was not as scriptural as it should be, and more filled with "feelings" and human examples. Yes, stories from others" life experiences are great illustrations, but I wanted more about scripture and what the Bible says.

My Thoughts:

A great start to a fun trilogy, Invasion keeps readers interested both emotionally and with lots of action. The main character, Colt, has a hardship that takes him to live with his grandfather. This hardship may end up being much more tragic that first expected and Colt intends to find out exactly what happened.

This young adult sci-fi novel starts out a bit slow but picks up with lots of action and secrets. Of course with sci-fi, there has to be fighting and aliens, so get ready to snuggle up with a book that takes the reader "out of this world"!

This book is recommended for young adults as well as older readers that enjoy a young male protagonist. Great to give to pre-teen/early teen readers, especially boys.

My Thoughts:

The last book in the series made us wonder about Erin's loyalty plus her illness really threw a wrench in things. Lily is gone and Eddie has been captured. That's about where we begin in Storm. If you haven't read the two previous books, you could probably pick this one up and not be very lost because of how the back story is woven throughout. This is really a nice addition for those like me who have been away from the series for a bit.

As the story unfolds, we discover one surprise after another - some predictable and some not. What will Logan do about Lily? Has he written her off? And then there's Eddie... Will he survive another period with the helmet? Is Erin really on board or is she still working with DOME? And will they find the doctor in time enough to save Erin? And what about the drought? Why isn't it ending?

One page turning event after another will keep the reader entertained and guessing until the end and then even beyond as the series continues with "SPARK". Full of suspense and excitement, this series will entertain both young adults and adults alike. Personally I have really enjoyed the series so far and cannot wait to get my hands on the next book. I must see what happens with Logan and... oops - can't share any spoilers. You'll just have to read this for yourself!!!

My Thoughts:

Please note: This is the third book in the C.H.A.O.S trilogy and really should not be read as a stand alone. Since there is not much back-story given, one will end up missing out on a lot of information that may hinder the story.

Colt and his group are back together on a mission - a dangerous mission that could cost the team members their lives. This time it's serious and the Thule are wanting world domination. Can Colt stop them? With Oz expelled, Jonas with a secret, Colt's experimental blood transfusion and Pierce a difficult member, can the team survive their own problems, let alone save mankind?

Packed with page-turning action, "Domination" finishes the trilogy nicely, yet at the same time leaves a opening for another story! This story is full of alien fighting, some stunning reveals and tragedy, making it worth the wait.

Throughout the story, the main character, Colt, talks about his faith and knows that God will never leave him. It seems a bit odd at times, especially when they are at war, but then again, what better place to be to rely on God?

This story is mostly geared towards male teens with all the war and fighting. However, with Danielle and Lily involved, this may also appeal to teen girls who enjoy science fiction or action-packed stories

My Thoughts:

I grew up in a family that didn't do Sunday dinners. We went to my grandmother's house every weekend and since she lived on a farm, there was nothing fancy - just a sit down to a nice hearty dinner after we helped with all the chores.  She didn't get out the fancy plates or anything special, we just had a good meal with family and friends if they happened to drop by.

"Return to Sunday Dinner" is a fantastic book. I was fascinated with the concept of a "traditional" Sunday dinner and enjoyed all the stories of how others celebrated their Sunday gatherings. To take the time and care of laying out a fancy table was a novel idea to me, but sounded like so many others did as a normal routine in years past. The shared stories of how things were done are in themselves a delight to read, and the recipes range from the simple and delicious to a bit more extravagant - but all very doable.

I loved reading all the stories and found that I wanted to start my own Sunday traditions after reading this book, however, the children are off to college, so I don't know if it will be too late to start now or not. We'll try it when they come home for winter and summer breaks.

The recipes are delicious and the the best part is that there are do-ahead hints and tips, so it makes the dinners easier to make on a schedule without feeling overwhelmed. The Coconut Cream Cake is a must and make sure to try Grandma's Fried Chicken!

This is a wonderful book to add to any kitchen library, but even more wonderful is the tradition that goes along with this book. If you are like me and didn't have a traditional Sunday dinner, make sure to pick this book up and start your own traditional Sunday meal. If you are already doing the traditional Sunday meal, you'll want to read this and add some new ideas and meals to your existing menus.

My Thoughts:

"Through Rushing Water" is a well written and emotionally charged historical novel that is sure to hold the reader's interest from beginning to end. The characters are wonderfully portrayed and so very realistic and will capture your heart as they take you through the time when the US government treated Indians shamefully - something that's not usually found in a piece of historical fiction!

This novel focuses on the Ponca Indians in the Dakota Territory and how they were treated. When Sophia Makinoff is sent there as a missionary, she was just biding time until she would transfer to the Far East. She had no idea that her destiny held something that would challenge and change her and yet give her a wonderful gift of purpose and happiness. One of my favorite characters, Sophia is one of those that is sure to stick with me for a long time.

Make sure to add this book to you must reads list, as it truly is one you MUST read!! This one comes highly recommended!

My Thoughts:

This is the second in the Middlefield Family series and I would not recommend starting with this one, but to read them in order starting with "Treasuring Emma". I did not realize this, and was quite lost in the beginning as there was no real backstory given. This book seems jump in where the previous book left off.

As the story continues, one does learn what happened previously to Laura and Sawyer, but the story would have been so much more enjoyable if I had started with the first book. Even so, I found myself totally immersed in the story and really liking the characters.

This was not the typical Amish story, but instead had some dark and unusual secrets that are revealed. Sawyer has to struggle with an introduction of a new person in his life, and Laura has to struggle with her scars. Both have to face issues of trust, love and forgiveness and do what is right.

This turned out to be a very good read and I'm looking forward to getting the first book to see exactly how things had unfolded to get both Laura and Sawyer to the point they are now. I can't wait for the next book in the series as I must know what happens next!!

My Thoughts:

"Arms of Love" was an enjoyable story that I found quite captivating. I enjoyed the theme of doing what is right and trying to listen to God's intent. The story deals with some difficult subjects: death, child abuse, war, and sacrifice, but shows their purpose and demonstrates the power of God's love, forgiveness and healing. 

Yet, I'm torn with the historical setting. I had difficulty with the story centered around the Amish, because they didn't come across to me as anything different than any other colonist. They dressed a bit different and didn't fight, but there were so many things that seemed inappropriate and not what I would expect from the Amish sect. I have not looked into the practices of those that came to  Penn's Woods in the 1700's, but one of the things the Old Order Amish in PA have made clear is that they haven't really changed over the years. So my thought is that if anything, the Amish then would be even more strict then than they are now. That, and of course the language, just didn't work for me. I had to continue telling myself that these characters were Amish. Yet, at the same time I was pleased to see that the practices of foot washing and bundling were included in the story. It was nice to have these historical practices included!

If you are looking for a good and entertaining story and don't mind how historically accurate things are, you will find this an enjoyable read!

My Thoughts:

"Brush of Angel's Wings" was a difficult book for me to "get into". I had a hard time with both Rachel and Jordan (the main characters). They were supposed to both be at least 20 years old, but they came across as so much younger and quite immature. As I read, I kept picturing them as being around 14 or 15 and had to stop and remind myself they were older. Thankfully, this changed as the story continued.

The book hinted about an event that took place with Rachel's brother and made me feel like I was missing something. One eventually gets most of the back story as the novel continues. I didn't realize until after finishing, that this was the second book in the series. Even though this could be read as a stand alone, I would suggest that one should start with the first book "The Promise of an Angel".

Along with the story of Rachel and Jordan, runs a side story of an angel and a fallen angel. These angels seem to be competing for Rachel's and Jordan's souls. Personally, I didn't feel that this competition did anything to help enhance the story, but instead, sidetracked and at times greatly annoyed me.

After about the first half of the book, the story picked up and the main characters became much more realistic in both attitude and age. I really began to enjoy the story, but then the angel story would interrupt for a few paragraphs, and seemed to pull me out of the world I was getting lost in.

With some really heart-tugging moments and some humor added throughout, this could have been a 4 star book (even with a rough start). However, for me, the good angel/bad angel war didn't add anything to the story, but instead subtracted a star.

My Thoughts:

Once again Rachel Hauck has captured my heart with her ability to pen such a beautiful story. From the beginning, I was captivated with Charlotte and her gift to find the perfect wedding gown. She could make everyone happy, but she couldn't seem do the same for herself.

When Charlotte buys a mysterious trunk, the contents make her search for answers about the woman or women who owned the beautiful item before and why they had the trunk sealed. As she continues on her search, she finds out about three other women spanning a century and what happened to each of them and how they connect to her.

There are times when one feels connected to a story and when that story ends, one feels a loss because they don't want to close the book and say goodbye to the characters. This is how I felt about Charlotte and her quest. Her being able to help others and not herself rang true for me. The curiosity of a sealed trunk and its contents would have also driven me to want to find out more, so again, I found a real connection with Charlotte.

What Charlotte discovers and the answers it brings gives a most satisfying ending to such a heartfelt story. Rachel's prose and gift for writing makes this a story that I will remember for a long time!

My Thoughts:

My first impression of "The American Patriot's Bible" was how well constructed and beautiful it is. The hard binding is nice and tight and lays flat making it easy to read. In the beginning is an illustrated presentation plate and numerous pages for your family records, ie: husband and wife family tree, children, grandchildren, church and service records, deaths, and even a place for special family history and ancestors of interest. Also included is a map of the United States, a chart when the states were added and the Seven Principals of Judeo-Christian Ethic (which our forefathers followed).

There is so much to love about this Bible. It is not only beautiful to look at, but full of information that made our United States a great nation. There are full color pages that highlight important parts of US history and throughout the Bible are many famous people who were important to making the United States a great nation. There were many moving articles, but one sticks out for me:  the founder of the Hilton Hotel chain had a prayer printed in many well known magazines on July 4, 1952 -this  prayer is included in its entirety.

This is the King James Version (KJV) and is one that every American would be proud to have in their Christian library. Because of its beauty and theme, this is perfect for gift-giving and would make a wonderful gift for those who are serving or have served in the armed forces. It would also be a wonderful gift for that favorite history student or teacher.

My Thoughts:

"Immanuel's Veins" holds all the qualities I love about Ted Dekker's novels - suspense, intrigue and bone-chilling scenes that makes me hold my breath, plus an amazing message that isn't soon forgotten.

I love Dekker's books. His writing style is one that sucks me in. From the time I open the book until the time I've finished it, I'm lost in another world that I don't want to be pulled away from. "Immanuel's Veins" did not disappoint me. It takes place in Russia in 1772 and focuses around Catherine the Great and one of her most loyal warriors, Toma Nicolescu. Toma is given the assignment of guarding the Cantemir family with the instructions he is not to become involved with either of the 2 daughters. The hint of danger and a darker presence starts early on in the book with the appearance of a blind man with a crow who warns Toma "evil is in contest with you."

The story is captivating and is full of symbolism. The characters are interesting and unforgettable, with my favorite being the main character, Toma. Unlike other novels I have read by Dekker, this one is written in the first person, giving and even more intimate understanding of what Toma perceives.

Note: This book, although considered Christian fiction, is also paranormal fiction and may appeal to a greater range of readers - not just Christian.

My Comments

Amish fiction is one of my guilty little pleasures. I adore the storyline, the simplicity of life, the faithfulness and reverence that is shown to family, friends, community and God. I am blessed to be in an area where we have both Amish and Mennonite families, but not nearly as many as in Lancaster County. When I cuddle up with an Amish novel, I will admit, I secretly go to that place when I was young... wishing I was part of their community. So, one may say I'm a bit biased here :)

Beth Wiseman is a pretty new-to-me author. I have only read one other novel by her, "Plain Pursuit" which is book two in this series. I enjoyed that one so much, that I had to get book one to read. Yes, I read them out of sequence, but it didn't ruin anything.

Plain Perfect was a heartwarming story of a woman searching for peace and she hopes that going to live with her Amish grandparents will help her find what she's looking for. The plot was interesting and one I'm sure all can identify with at some point in their lives. I found the characters quite believable, but maybe a little too naive at times.

I did love the story, and Beth Wiseman told a sweet and heartwarming tale. This was a quick read, and a great book to cozy up with. I loved the morals and lessons taught, and will be a great book to pass on to my daughter. Another wonderful feature to this series is the recipes located in the back of the book. You'll be able to recreate some of the dishes discussed in the story, and believe me, they are yummy!!

Review: Revolve 2010

I was excited when this book arrived. I was positive that my teen would love it, so I gave it to her to open and look over. She disappeared with it and that evening she came to me and said she read over the articles and was hugely disappointed. She brought the Biblezine out and we went over it together and she explained what she felt was wrong with it - and I was shocked with what she showed me.

The description on the website boasts "...this New Testament continues showing teen girls that the Bible is relevant to their lives." I had expected a flashy type magazine to catch a teen's eye, but with articles that would compliment the New Testament text that was on the page and maybe bring that text to something relevant to life today. What I discovered was a bunch of articles thrown in throughout the NT with no rhyme or reason. There were make-up tips, hair dyeing tips, fashion advice, guy tips... and nothing that would really enhance the Bible scripture on that page. I couldn't find any connection at all. The NT text is there as well as a few Bible notes, but I really doubt that it would be read. Featured on most pages are verses of
the Psalms in text lingo that my daughter felt was "horrible" and had no place or purpose at all.

My teen described "Revolve 2010" as "cheapening the Bible". She said if she wants a teen magazine, she'll buy one. If she wants something that helps her apply the Bible to everyday life, this isn't it. She stated matter-of-factly she won't be recommending this to anyone.

I, too, read over the articles and understand what she's talking about. I was so excited as a parent to find something I thought would appeal and be useful to my teen. Instead, I found something my teen found distasteful. Teens don't need something flashy or worldly - they want substance! Sadly, this just doesn't meet that bill.

Carley has no idea what she is in for, but she knows the Plain Life has been good for Lillian. Just after Carley arrives, the Stolfus's son becomes ill. They take David to the hospital, where they meet a doctor that Lillian's husband, Samuel, doesn't want treating his son. What is Samuel's aversion to Dr. Noah?

As Carley becomes more involved with Lillian and Samuel's family, she learns more about her relationship with God, what it's like to be part of a community, the consequences of the choices we make, and what really is important in life.

My Comments:

I love reading Amish novels, but it's hard finding authors that can live up to the standard that Beverly Lewis set. Beth Wiseman seems to be the exception, and may have even passed that standard. In Plain Pursuit, Wiseman flawlessly blends both views and feelings of the Amish and the Englisch when she puts Carley in the Stolfus household and in the middle of the Amish community. It gave the book a certain realism and made the characters multidimensional. I enjoyed the book being centered around an Englischer intruding into the lives of the Amish instead of being focused on just the Amish point of view. I found the book refreshing, faith building and heartwarming. (Shhhh... don't tell anyone, but there were even times I found tears trying to surface.)

This is the second book of Wiseman's Daughters of the Promise series, however, I read it as a stand alone novel, and didn't feel lost or like I was missing anything. I did love the book enough to order the first book Plain Perfection and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

One last note... In the back of the book are some absolutely delicious authentic Amish recipes. What a lovely bonus to a delightful novel!

Roy Hallums was a 56 year old retired Navel Commander who was working for a food supply contractor in Iraq. On November 1, 2004, Roy was abducted and held hostage for 311 days. During his first few months, Roy was beaten and mentally tortured while he was moved from place to place. Then, he came to his last prison, a 4 foot high basement that he was kept in, blindfolded and bound, until he was finally rescued.

My comments:

I was eager to read Roy's story, as I remember when Roy was abducted, and the video that was sent to the media, as well as the interviews with his family. Roy's book held me in it's grips from beginning to end. I am amazed at his resilience and bravery not only to go back over his time in captivity, but to how he told his story so eloquently. I cannot imagine one surviving what Roy had, let alone staying sane and in control all throughout the ordeal.

I cannot speak highly enough about this book, nor highly enough of how Roy is helping others to get a grasp of what happens to someone who is abducted in Iraq. This book was an excellent read and very well written and should be put on everyone's to-read list for this year!
