My Thoughts:

Alongside is definitely a book written by someone who knows teens and how to communicate with them. Drew Hill does a remarkable job of illustrating how to work with teens and connect with them. I promise you, that reading this book will give you much needed insight - no matter how much you think you know about talking to this age group. Kids need you to be on their level and believe me, this book will show you how to get there.

This book is a must for anyone who has a teen, knows a teen or works with a teen. It will change not only how you communicate with them, but will open a great door of understanding towards them. This is the secret to success to pass on the Gospel without them shutting down on you.

I received an egalley of this book to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review, but instead, one that gives my honest opinion.

More Than I Could Ever Hope For

GOD has a way of putting surprises in our lives that we would never expect. As I continued to read the Bible and pray, my eyes were opened and I softened and began to really HEAR what He was telling me. I guess he must have decided I was receptive to His plan because He started implementing it well before I could see it happening.

Every once in a while, I would run into my ex-husband. We were always civil and decent to each other. If he found out I needed something like the car fixed or tech advice, he'd always offer to help. I always declined. He's my ex, so why would I have him continue to help me?! But one day, he made a point of driving to where I worked, just to check my car because of some odd tire wear. I couldn't believe he'd go out of his way just for that and for me, so I bought him dinner as a thank you.

As time went on, we would go out for dinner every once in a while, but in late fall, we started actually spending more time together, going to the movies, dinner and talking. Then we did day trips and all the while I was still reading the Bible and praying. I discovered in many places in Paul's books and especially 1Cor 7:10-11 that even though we are divorced, in the eyes of God, we are basically still married and should reconcile or never marry another. My ex came across the same thing.

10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

This weighed heavily on our hearts and one day, it came out - both of us were contemplating the same thing. After many long discussions we decided we should reconcile. We will be getting remarried on our anniversary date!

Since this has been decided, I cannot tell you the peace we've both felt. Unfortunately, others around us are not so thrilled and have tried discouraging us. My closest friend, who is a Christian, believes that we are doing the right thing. She said she sees how we are together and how miserable we have been apart. She believes we needed the time apart to grow and see what is was most important - God. When God was lost in my life and I started listening to the ways of the world, I lost sight of things. How true this is! I needed the total breakdown and heartache to find what was most important.

Life Is Full Of Lessons

Life is full of lessons - some extremely difficult, some easy and some that take you totally by surprise. My last few years have been full of lesson - mostly difficult and some made me wonder if I was going to survive: However, I made it through, with the help the help of the Lord.

As you know, I was divorced 2 years ago, went to Australia to heal and came back to begin my life over. I found a part time job, an apartment and then life became more interesting as I looked for more work. I was carrying 3 part time jobs at one point last year and then found a full time job. Not the dream job I've always wanted it, but a good paying full time job in food services that has good benefits. Life seemed to be finally looking up. Then came the surprise.

Spiritually and emotionally, I was a mess. I tried hiding from God. My life was in shambles, I had broken my vow to be together with my husband forever, and I was really seeing myself as I truly was and not liking it one bit. So, like the child who took a cookie from the cookie jar when told not to, I hid from my Father. I didn't read my Bible, didn't pray, and stayed as far away as I could from Him. But it appeared He wasn't going to allow that at all. People would come to me and ask if I had a Church that I attended. I would say no and then be invited to attend theirs. I had one woman give me a book called "Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence" by Sarah Young and she kept telling me things about forgiveness and stated she knew I was haunted by what happened. I attended church a few times when I wasn't working and I began reading the Bible.

The healing that I needed finally came, but only after learning to forgive myself and learning to accept and like myself for who I am. With that came a change in me. I became a calmer, more peaceful and more loving and accepting person. I didn't notice it at first, but as I look back, I can really notice a difference. God has been very good to me. I now have everything need and more than I could ever hope for!

My Thoughts:

This NIV Devotional Bible is geared especially for today's woman and the problems and challenges she faces. Down to earth and real life devotionals are sprinkled throughout this hardbound Bible and allow the reader to choose which path she wants to take to follow those devotions.

Text is written in paragraph format and the book stays open nicely for reading and studying. There are some footnotes that are found at the bottom of the page and no center columns. The margins really don't allow for taking notes and the back contains only a Table of Weights and Measures, a short biography about each of the authors, an Index of Devotions by Author as well as a Topical Index. This Bible does not contain any maps or a concordance.

My Thoughts:

The NIV Rock Solid Study Bible for Teens is a hard bound and attractive bible that will stand up to much use and abuse. It is done in paragraph style and contains gray boxes with such things as truths, principles, plans and people, while the promises found in the Bible are highlighted in a box with a border and a cross to really stick out. At the beginning of each chapter, one page is devoted to a book outline and information about the book. In the back of the Bible one will find a concordance, a table of weights and measures, a Bible reading plan, an index to all the Truths, Promises, Principles, Plans, People and God, plus some very nice full colored maps.

As a study Bible, I would have liked to see more for references while reading. There are no center columns and the references at the bottom of the pages are sparse. For me another downside is the words of Christ are not in red. With that said, this is still a nice teen study Bible for those who use the NIV.

My Thoughts:

A hard-covered and sturdy NIV Bible that let's you know it was definitely made for boys. From it's diamond-plating steel looking cover, to the blue print with orange headings, chapter numbers and orange comment boxes, it should appeal to most tween males.

I found the colors interesting but the print was a little hard for me to read. The comment boxes were helpful, but I personally didn't care for them. They were more to the point than those in the "NIV FaithGirlz! Bible" that I reviewed yesterday. Let's look at the same example I gave yesterday with David and Bathsheba. The comment box for this Bible gives a good analogy of being sinful and needing to come straight with God. In David's instance he was "tangled in sexual sin.." and he needed to "come clean".

This book doesn't seem to be as "delicate" as the girl's Bible, but the modern language is still there making it feel like one has to through in a bunch of glitz to make Bible reading appealing to our youth. These Bibles don't work for us, but may be fine for others. If you don't have a problem with the modern style language and enjoy fun commentaries, this Bible may work for you and your family.

My Thoughts:

This lovely hard-covered NIV Bible screams it was made for girls. From it's pink floral cover, to the purple print with pink headings, chapter numbers and pink comment boxes, it will delight any girl that enjoys being feminine.

I found the colors delightful but the print was a little hard on my older eyes. My teen daughter didn't find a problem though. The comment boxes were helpful, but I personally didn't care for the "dumbed down" modern language. For example, in one of the comment boxes that explains about David stealing Bathsheba away from Uriah, it states "David was WAY sorry." Coming from the Charlotte Mason school of thought, we should be giving our children things that increase their knowledge level and that includes vocabulary as well.

Although a delight to look at, I think it falls short with the modern language. If you don't have a problem with the language and enjoy Nancy Rue's books, you may find this will work for you and your family.

My Thoughts:

My first impression of "The American Patriot's Bible" was how well constructed and beautiful it is. The hard binding is nice and tight and lays flat making it easy to read. In the beginning is an illustrated presentation plate and numerous pages for your family records, ie: husband and wife family tree, children, grandchildren, church and service records, deaths, and even a place for special family history and ancestors of interest. Also included is a map of the United States, a chart when the states were added and the Seven Principals of Judeo-Christian Ethic (which our forefathers followed).

There is so much to love about this Bible. It is not only beautiful to look at, but full of information that made our United States a great nation. There are full color pages that highlight important parts of US history and throughout the Bible are many famous people who were important to making the United States a great nation. There were many moving articles, but one sticks out for me:  the founder of the Hilton Hotel chain had a prayer printed in many well known magazines on July 4, 1952 -this  prayer is included in its entirety.

This is the King James Version (KJV) and is one that every American would be proud to have in their Christian library. Because of its beauty and theme, this is perfect for gift-giving and would make a wonderful gift for those who are serving or have served in the armed forces. It would also be a wonderful gift for that favorite history student or teacher.
