About Silas:
Robert J. Duperre, author of The Fall and Dead of Winter, now presents Silas, a contemporary fantasy novel.
Ken Lowery is a man at odds with his life. He hates his job, is disappointed in his marriage, and feels resigned to leading a mundane existence.
That all changes when his wife brings home a rambunctious Black Labrador puppy named Silas, who forges a remarkable connection with Ken and begins to heal his inner turmoil. When some neighborhood children start to go missing, he takes it upon himself to protect those around him and is thrust into a surreal world where monsters roam. Not everything is what it seems to be, he soon discovers, including his new best friend.
My Thoughts:
Robert Duperre's writing style is one that captivated me from the start. It is personal and extremely realistic and made the main character, Ken, come to life. I honestly felt like I was sitting and listening to a real account of a true story. Duperre has an amazing talent for storytelling!
Ken was a character I couldn't help but like. He was downright to the point and at times quite harsh. When Silas entered his life, I had to laugh, because I saw my husband with our dog when we first got him. This story captures that special bond between man and his dog, and weaves a magic through that relationship that works, and works well. And Silas... oh, Silas is a heart stealer!
I can't sing praises enough for this story. It made me laugh and cry (yes, really cry - tears and all) and is going to be a story I long remember. This fantasy was one of the best I've read this year, and made my favorites list. Mr. Duperre is certainly an author I'm keeping my eye on.
Last Fives:
Last Fives was a fun way to learn a little more about Robert. He was asked 5 questions about some of his lasts and this is what he had to say:
1. What is the last movie you saw?
Insidious – what a surprisingly frightening movie!
2. What is the last book you read?
Draculas by Konrath, Crouch, et al – talk about campy, gross fun!
3. What is the last person you spoke to?
My wife Jess. She’s always the last person I speak with. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
4. What is the last thing you ate?
Prime rib at the restaurant down the street, a little dive called Caseys. Great food. Super-nice people.
5. What is the last thing you’d like to share with us?
Just like to say that I feel all children should be indoctrinated into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when they hit 12 years old. I’ve done it with all my children, and helped create fans for life. It’s the best show ever on television, and they can learn a lot from it – especially girls.
