The Book of Lost Fragrances by M. J. Rose

The Book of Lost Fragrances
The Renincarnationist Series - Book 4
Author: M. J. Rose
Publisher: Atria Books (March 13, 2012)
Hardcover with 384 pages
ISBN: 9781451621303

About the Book:
A sweeping and suspenseful tale of secrets, intrigue, and lovers separated by time, all connected through the mystical qualities of a perfume created in the days of Cleopatra--and lost for 2,000 years.

Jac L'Etoile has always been haunted by the past, her memories infused with the exotic scents that she grew up surrounded by as the heir to a storied French perfume company. In order to flee the pain of those remembrances--and of her mother's suicide--she moved to America. Now, fourteen years later she and her brother have inherited the company along with it's financial problems. But when Robbie hints at an earth-shattering discovery in the family archives and then suddenly goes missing--leaving a dead body in his wake--Jac is plunged into a world she thought she'd left behind.

Back in Paris to investigate her brother's disappearance, Jac becomes haunted by the legend the House of L'Etoile has been espousing since 1799. Is there a scent that can unlock the mystery of reincarnation - or is it just another dream infused perfume?

The Book of Lost Fragrances fuses history, passion, and suspense, moving from Cleopatra's Egypt and the terrors of revolutionary France to Tibet's battle with China and the glamour of modern-day Paris. Jac's quest for the ancient perfume someone is willing to kill for becomes the key to understanding her own troubled past.

My Thoughts:

Flawlessly blending mystery, historical fiction and romance, M. J. Rose has again written a captivating story that transports the reader back in time. She pens a brilliant story focused around a fragrance that is guaranteed to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.

All of Rose's characters have a depth and reality that one can identify and build a "relationship" with. With these relationships, it makes it bittersweet when one finally finishes the story. You need to know how it's going to end - but you don't want it to end.

Although this is book number 4 of the Renincarnationist series, I found that "The Book of Lost Fragrances" was easily read as a stand alone, but be warned - after reading this one, you will want to get the rest of the series!

Warning: This is a sensual story and deals with the subjection of reincarnation.

"The Hypnotist" by M.J. Rose #TheHypnotistVirtualBookTour

The Hypnotist
Author: M. J. Rose
Publisher: Mira; Original edition (April 19, 2011)
ISBN-13: 978-0778329206
Paperback: 416 pages

About the Book:
Haunted by his inability to stop the murder of a beautiful young painter twenty years ago, Lucian Glass keeps his demons at bay through his fascinating work with the FBI's Art Crime Team. Investigating a crazed collector who's begun destroying prized masterworks, Glass is thrust into a bizarre hostage negotiation that takes him undercover at the Phoenix Foundation—dedicated to the science of past-life study. There, to maintain his cover, he submits to the treatment of a hypnotist.
Under hypnosis, Glass travels from ancient Greece to nineteenth-century Persia, while the case takes him from New York to Paris and the movie while the case takes him from New York to Paris and the movie capital of the world. These journeys will change his very understanding of reality, lead him to question his own sanity and land him at the center of perhaps the most audacious art heist in history: a fifteen-hundred-year-old sculpture the nation of Iran will do anything to recover.

My Thoughts:

I must first warn anyone who is planning on reading this book, that you might as well just order the first two books in the series right now, because they are going to end in your TBR pile anyhow. Secondly, you should just plan on a long afternoon of reading, because once you start, you won't be able to put this book aside. I had read over 150 pages before I realized it, and if it weren't for having other obligations, I would have NEVER put it aside.

"The Hypnotist" is the third book in Renincarnationist series, but it reads like a stand-alone. With rich character development and an intriguing story line, this book leaves the reader wanting nothing except reading more penned by the author! Truly, M.J. Rose is a master of writing captivating books and I have a sneaking suspicion that she is going to make it to the top of my favorite authors list very soon.

"The Hypnotist" centers around art, art history, and a reincarnation theory. It appears to be well researched and extremely believable and the resolution to the mystery appears quite plausible (and very surprising!). The characters were well developed and I found myself very fond of Lucian Glass. His story and drive were quite appealing to me, but I must admit, I'm one that always favors haunted and obsessed characters.

One of the best books I've read this year, "The Hypnotist" left me wanting to more of MJ Rose's work. All the hype about this author is well deserved. If there is any book you must add to your list, this is the one! You won't be sorry.

Recommended for those that love art history, historical fiction, mysteries and those interested in reincarnation.
