Happy New Year
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We can again begin with a brand new slate and a fresh outlook with new goals. There are no failures, just setbacks that can be learned from or changed. I love sitting down at the beginning of each year and plan. Those plans will be many and I may or may not attempt or succeed at doing them all, but this list of plans always signifies hope and dreams for me.
Yesterday, we went to town to get a pork shoulder for the traditional New Year's Pork and Sauerkraut and of course I have to browse the after Christmas markdowns. We always replenish our wrapping paper and boxes for the next year and look for things that can be used throughout the year as well.
I came across a marked down amaryllis that was abused and begged to be rescued. It absolutely STANK with the smell of a putrid aquarium - almost a sewer smell to it. The poor bulb was swimming in water and it was hacked off - no flower, no leaves, nothing but a spent mass of smell.
I had to take it home and disassemble it. What I found was a bulb that had the basal plate chopped off, roots trying to grow but most were rotted off. I washed it off and cleaned it as best as I could.
I really wish I had taken photos of the condition it was in when I took it out of the container, but my main concern was getting this poor thing planted in a new pot in soil and hope that it would recover from all its abuse.
It is now in a sunny window and possibly in soil for the first time in its life. I wonder what it's "thinking" now...
The plant was in a very tall vase type container that was filled with rocks and the spiked stand that kept it off the bottom of the container and kept it level. These things had to be washed and washed to get rid of the putrid smell. They still need to be bleached and then they will all be repurposed. That poor amaryllis will never have to worry about seeing that torture chamber again.
Now we just have to convince it to survive...

3 Reasons New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work
3 Reasons New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work and
What You Should Do Instead if You Want to Succeed in 2012

In the military we are results oriented, period! And there is no excuse for not producing results.Nobody wants to be known as "that guy" who can't be counted on. I know very few, if any, successful people who take New Year’s resolutions seriously (and I’m blessed to know quite a few, actually). A great number of people who are successful at what they do are successful because they are results-focused and results-oriented, they don’t make excuses for failure, they are go-getters and stubborn in their commitment to not give up and stick with it and they don’t stake the success of their careers or personal lives on short-lived, “feel-good” marketing gimmicks that reappear once a year every January (not to sound harsh, but let’s be honest).
1. New Year’s resolutions are meant to be broken. They don’t work because nobody keeps them. People make their resolutions with the intention of receiving some sort of pleasure or reward and expect it to happen almost instantaneously. When it doesn’t come fast enough they give up. But I can tell you from personal experience that the desire to avoid imminent pain or discomfort will move more people in a given direction faster than any other force, even the promise of pleasure or reward. Most people, when it comes to their resolutions, focus only on what they want to happen. But you will take more consistent action when you have the daunting thoughts of the things you don’t want to happen in the forefront of your mind accompanying those things you do want.
2. New Year’s resolutions do more damage than goodbecause people don’t know how to properly set and actually achieve goals. Most people are half-hearted in their commitments to their New Year’s resolutions because they want the result without the work. Then they feel like failures when they choose to give up in a month or two because they’ve decided that what they thought they wanted isn’t worth the effort. Again, they beat themselves down mentally and feel like failures because they gave up and it’s back to square one.
3. People despise change. People instinctively try to avoid change instead of embracing it. People like their comfort zones and New Year’s resolutions require people to get out of those comfort zones and to stay out of them. Pursuing and reaching a New Year’s resolution typically involves a moderate to major change in a person’s daily lifestyle. Doing something different takes time to develop into a habit—roughly 3 weeks according to some experts. Drastic, sudden changes in personal lifestyle typically won’t last for any extended period of time because most people simply don’t want whatever it is they said they wanted badly enough.
B.C. FLEMING’S SOLUTION TO YOUR ANTI-NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION:
1. Make a list of 3 things you absolutely DO NOT want to have happen in your life this year (in the “resolution areas” as I call them—areas you’re looking to improve in). Underneath that list of things you don’t want to happen, make a sub-list of 3 simple, practical things you are going to do every single day in order to avoid having those things happen. At the end of the paper, write one short, simple phrase stating your ultimate goal or desire in doing these things—and be specific (seeing your end result written down is KEY)—and then write down a specific date as a deadline.
2. Make 3-5 copies of this short, simple list.
3. Tape these on your mirror, next to your toilet, in your car, on your refrigerator, on the backside of your front door—anywhere you will be forced to run into them and look at them on a daily basis. Then do the activities listed which will ultimately lead you to your goal. Success here is in keeping it simple and doable.
4. Stay consistent! Truth is, if you want something badly enough and are willing to do whatever it takes and stick with it, you’ll get it. Remember… At the end of the day you have nobody to blame and your success is your own fault!

Out With the Old
Happy New Year !!!
First I want to wish all a happy and prosperous new year. I hope that you have nothing but happiness and blessings as we look forward to a new beginning :)
I cannot believe that 2011 is over and a new year has begun. I'm so happy for a new beginning and that the slate has been wiped clean. If you have been following this blog for any length of time, you will know that we've faced a few challenges - the last one being the loss of my husband's job. His last day was Friday and after 24 years of service, he is quite at a loss of where to turn next. One thing that is facing him is a career change and probable relocation. That both excites and terrifies him. He's not a spring chicken any more, and he's concerned what employment opportunities are out there, what he's qualified for, and what factor his age is going to have on everything.
With hubby home, we will be sharing the PC a lot as he/we look for work and other opportunities. So what does that mean for Just One More Paragraph? Hopefully, there won't be a change. This blog has been my sanity through the loss of family members and friends, illness, and "empty nest syndrome". It only seems natural it will continue through our next challenge of our lives.
So here we stand - jobless, 2 children in college, and facing a world of unknowns. Am I scared? To be completely honest... no. This is exciting! The sense of freedom is overwhelming. We can go anywhere and do anything. This time when we start over - there are no ties to keep us in this area. I've never known this type of freedom before. Mind you - I am looking at this whole mess with rose-colored glasses on and someday I'm bound to take them off. But until then, I am really looking forward to this change.

Happy New Year!!! Let's Welcome 2011 With Some Change.....
Each New Year always brings such hope and promise of a year better than the last. It brings not only hope of new things, but also allows us to reflect on the past year and thank God for the blessings he bestowed upon us, as well as the grace and love he gave us to get through the rough spots.
This year brings change in our lives here as well as a bit of a change to this blog. When I started blogging about my reads, it was an outlet to voice my thoughts about what I was reading to a journal that would listen much better than my husband. Instead, this blog became something I never expected - a review blog with more offers of books to review than I could ever possibly read. This opportunity was amazing and beyond my wildest dreams and a huge blessing. It occupied my time after the passing of my father and saw me through many difficult times over the past year. I was able to escape reality through the pages of a book and all I needed to do was write a review.
At first reviewing was very easy, as all the material was new and unusual to me. I was pretty much a non-fiction reader that didn't splurge much in fiction for myself. I was thrilled to be able to read all the new books and dive into genre that I wasn't familiar with. Then the reviews became harder as I struggled with trying to write about books that were once exciting but soon came to feel like many of the genres were all using the same template. It's strange writing this, because I'm not saying that the quality of the books were different than the first one that I read, it's more that they just became alike. The thrill seemed to be gone and as I read, I would find myself thinking this is just like.... That made it harder to write and original review and I starting feeling stale and not enjoying certain genres as much. I really didn't want my love of reading to become a chore, but it seemed that was the road I was heading down.
I needed to step back a bit and look at what I really wanted. This blog is my hobby - not a paid job, and all my time here is volunteered. It has taken down some interesting roads... I've met some of the most awesome authors and PR professionals. I've made some amazing friends through this blog, and it has been with their suggestions and input that I've come to the conclusion that this blog needs to change. Goodbye stale and hello something different....
No, the book discussions and reviews will not disappear - but I have decided to follow the suggestion to add a little of my life content here. I have had many ask about me personally, but I thought a straight review blog was the way to go. Yet, here I am, feeling inadequate, stale and boring. I guess it's time to take advice from those who have more experience and insight.
So, in the coming months, you'll see a little bit about my life, my loves and hobbies along with our changing life here. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
Wishing you all a fantastic new year and may you find yourself richly blessed beyond your wildest dreams...
